Inspirational Self-Help Guru?
If it's Waterloo Station, London, then it must be the Absolute Power tour overseas. Pretty neat to see your work standing large in old Waterloo. The woman next to me - Cathy Scofield from Simon and Schuster. In fact, I was feeling kind of cocky until a woman walked up and asked me what my "self-help" book was about and if there was a money-back guarantee if one didn't achieve "Absolute Power" after reading it. So it goes!

American Readers in Norway
Linda and Michael Zucher, American readers and fans in Norway, with the Norwegian version of Absolute Power (All Makt). The novel was published in two parts in Norway, with a cost of nearly $48 US for the entire novel. These Norwegians are die-hard readers and fans!

If it's Tuesday, I Think It's Stockholm!
Visiting Sweden was the only time I've awoken and not known what country I was in. The Swedes are terrific and the country is beautiful. On a bullet train from Stockholm to Göteborg they hand out free gum to chew so your ears won't pop going through tunnels. Now that's hospitality!

Total Control
A True Winner
A truly wonderful part of being a writer is meeting supporters of books and reading. This terrific woman is a patron of the library in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. It was an honor meeting her at the luncheon I attended there. The title of the book she's holding is an apt description of her.

Overwhelmed: Frankfurt Book Fair
The Frankfurt Book Fair is the world's largest book event in the world. Quite an experience! My German publisher, the German book club that has selected my books for its readers, and the German people have certainly embraced my writing, much to my pleasure! Thanks to all of you!

Signing from the Heart
Photos from a signing in Virginia for The Winner. While I am comfortable speaking to larger groups, I am always happier conversing individually and in small groups with booklovers like these.

Blown up in Amsterdam: Really!
This is the rehearsal for Holland's Year 2000 "Month of the Thriller" Celebration, of which I was the featured writer. In honor of the occassion, I published my only novella to date, Nachtwerk (Office Hours). Here, the box has just "exploded" and is collapsing, revealing me to the crowd.

Signing on the run is a desirable skill. Whether running for a train, plane, or the next event, if someone has a book to be signed, my advice to other writers: SIGN IT! The readers are who make my profession possible, and I owe them a signature, at least.

Schmoozing with the Big Guys
The man in the center is Larry Kirshbaum, chairman of Time Warner Trade Publishing, a dear friend of mine, and a highly respected man in publishing. Larry is also quite popular at parties. like this one held in Union Station to celebrate the publication of Saving Faith.

I Can Do Two Things At Once!
As a result of years of experience, I've perfected the art of signing books while carrying on a conversation with (and looking at) the person. If you stop by the signing table and begin chatting, I promise I'm paying attention while signing!

Library of Virginia Signing
A signing at the Library of Virginia, sponsored in part by the Virginia Center for the Book. The Commonwealth's showcase library and archives, it's a state-of-the-art facility with lots of electronic gizmos. However, as it should be, the staff who work there and the folks who utilize its services are far more important.

Fundraising While Touring
I always meet some wonderful people while on tour. At this fundraising luncheon for the Arizona Kidney Foundation, I am talking with Rick West, a long term supporter of the Foundation. A standing room only crowd of over 1,400 people who love books, reading, and have a great sense of community spirit. Keep up the great work, Phoenix!

Taking it to the West Coast
As an East Coast resident, I don't get out to the West Coast as often as I would like. The Wish You Well tour, however, afforded me the opportunity to visit several locations from Washington state south to California. Here, I am signing at Esmerelda's Books in Del Mar, California. Since I published this Web site, I have learned that Californians visit the site almost as often as Virginians - thanks for the great traffic and exposure!

Visiting the Independent Stores
It's difficult to balance the need to market books to a large audience and my desire to visit with readers in local bookshops. To work out that balance, I try to mix as many independent booksellers as possible into my tour. Here, I am signing at Malaprop's Bookstore in Asheville, North Carolina.

Meeting Folks on the Road
While I work to avoid the celebrity attached with being an internationally best selling novel, I do like to meet my fellow writers in the various discussions and panels we writers attend. While on tour with Wish You Well, I enjoyed meeting Malachy McCourt and Judith Viorst. A great event!
