LITTLE, BROWN AND COMPANY TO DEBUT NEW COLOPHON

New York, NY (May 20, 2026) – Sally Kim, President and Publisher of Little, Brown and Company, announced today that the venerated, 189-year-old publisher of such classics as Little Women and The Catcher in the Rye, as well as modern classics such as Infinite Jest, The Tipping Point, Room, Circe, and The Goldfinch, will be introducing a new colophon for its divisional branding and in all books for its flagship imprint starting in Fall of 2026.
Last changed in 2009 – when Little, Brown introduced a logo that was inspired by antique typewriter keys to honor its rich publishing history – the new colophon will feature a pared back and sleek look.
Sally Kim says, “We’ve been hard at work transforming the publishing programs across the Little, Brown division these past couple of years, acquiring and publishing into new categories and reaching new readers, and we’re excited for the fresh look of our colophon to reflect the timely and robust books of quality and merit that define what a Little, Brown book means now, and in the many years to come.”
Little, Brown Executive Art Director Gregg Kulick says, “A colophon is the face of a publishing house. It signals that a book belongs to a family that cares deeply about quality. When Sally Kim took over Little, Brown and Company in March 2024, one of the first things we discussed was the idea of creating a new logo. It felt important that Little, Brown be seen as the heritage brand it truly is, with a visual identity that fully reflects that history and stature, as well as its future.”
Under Kulick, Little, Brown’s design team explored a wide range of directions, but in the end realized the strongest foundation was already there. The current mark, commissioned by then-Little, Brown publisher Michael Pietsch and designed by Lance Hidy, is simple, recognizable, and elegant. Rather than starting over completely, the LB team chose to build on those strengths. Art Director June Park worked with designer Chris Allen to refine the logo into a clean geometric design that feels both modern and connected to the imprint’s history. Together, they systematized the mark across several imprints that contain the Little, Brown name, including Little, Brown Spark. Colophons for the other LB imprints, including Voracious and Algonquin, will remain unchanged.
Before 2009 – and for over 100 years – the imprint’s logo depicted the monument designed by Charles Bulfinch that once stood atop Beacon Hill in Boston. The monument originally commemorated the American Revolution, and its use in the Little, Brown logo symbolized the firm’s long-standing connection to Boston, where it had been founded by Charles Little and James Brown in 1837, and its role as a “beacon” of literature. In 2009, Little, Brown introduced a new logo that was inspired by antique typewriter keys, honoring the group’s rich history of publishing great writers since 1837. Today’s new colophon will begin appearing on spines and inside books beginning in August 2026, and beyond.
